The language requirements at the universities abroad are very individual - whether they ask you to take a language test or whether they may not have a requirement at all.
Exchange outside of Europe
As mentioned, language requirements differ greatly from university to university and it can for this reason be hard to say much in general about them.
For this reason, please check each university profile for their individual language requirements on Beyond Borders. We will only be able to process your application for exchange, if you have enclosed the required language documentation for each of your prioritized universities. Please note that if the universities require a language test (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test), it is sufficient to enclose documentation that you have registered for the test. If you are required to take a language test, we recommend that you sign up to take a test in mid January for study abroad in the following fall semester, and early July for study abroad in the following spring semester. If you have already completed a language test, it must be valid for at least 6 months after DTU's application deadline.
Language Statement from DTU
In some cases, the host university only requires a signed language statement from DTU that describes your English proficiency. DTU issues two different kinds of language statements that you can download and attach to your application. Find a short description of the two documents below and click to download a template:
Version 1: "Language Statement English B2"
This document generally states that you as a DTU student has an English language proficiency equivalent to English B2. The letter contains a short description of level B2.
Version 2: "Language Statement Study Programme English Taught"
You can ONLY use this document if you are enrolled in a study programme completely taught in English. This mainly includes MSc-students. The letter contains a short description of the language level.
If your host university requires a document with personal information (name and student number), please send an email to your contact person here at DTU, and they will help you.
Exchange within Europe
If you are going on exchange within Europe (with the exception of Switzerland) it is referred to as an Erasmus exchange. As an Erasmus student, one of the requirements is that you take an online language test known as 'the OLS' sent by e-mail – both before and after your studies abroad.
Your OLS language results follow a grading scale by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The scale goes from A1-C2 and you can find a description of each level here.
You will receive a link to the OLS test after you have been selected for one of the exchange spots in Europe. However, please be aware that not all universities may accept the OLS test as documentation for your language level. In this case you can contact Studieskolen and arrange for a test/ language course there.
