Course selection

In your online application on Beyond Borders, you will need to list three courses for each of your prioritized universities. Read on below to see how you ensure that the university/ faculty/department/ school is relevant for you and your DTU study programme - before you include it in your application for exchange.

Course selection to your application in DTU Beyond Borders

As part of your application for exchange, we ask you to list three courses for each of your prioritized universities.

While these courses are not binding and does not necessarily equal 30 ECTS, they assure us that you have done your research and made sure that you will be able to find a sufficient amount of relevant courses at the universities you wish to apply for.

In the process of choosing your courses, it is essential that you check out the individual universities' information pages on 'Beyond Borders'. Here it is particularly important that you are aware of the following:

  • The title - e.g. 'Aalto University - School of Engineering'
The title specifies who the exchange agreement is with and it is often listed as a school/department or faculty. In this case the actual exchange agreement is within the School of Engineering (and not the entire university), which means that you will have to able to find all of your courses at this school.
We often have more than one exchange agreement with the same university - in this case it is important that you indicate which (or several) of the agreements you are applying to and list three courses of interest under each prioritized university in your application.

  • University wide
If the university page includes ‘university wide’ in the title, this indicates that you will be able to choose courses from the entire university’s course catalogue as long as you live up to potential pre-requisites.

  • Education level of agreement
This indicates whether the courses within this agreement will be at BSc/BEng or MSc level.

  • Description, Programmes and Courses, Course Restrictions
Make sure you read the descriptions for important comments e.g. in regards to possible course restrictions, housing situation, type of assessment (exams).Course restrictions are particularly important, as it will be listed here if programs and courses are closed for exchange students.

Start early

Finding your courses at several different course databases and checking the relevancy of agreements takes times. For this reason, we encourage you to start looking into your courses and university wishes early on, take your time and should you stumble upon any questions as you go, please do not hesitate to contact us.

After you have been selected for an exchange spot

Once you have been selected for an exchange spot, it is time to find the courses you wish to enroll in. In this among other things, you will need to find out how many international credits/units you need to take abroad to be a full time student (equivalent to 30 ECTS at DTU). The information on the annual workload is available on the individual university pages in Beyond Borders. After you have found the annual work load and the courses you wish to follow abroad, the next step will be to apply for the pre-approval of credits, which we will go into detail with under 'Predeparture information'.

Find inspiration in 'The Credit Transfer Database'

The Credit Transfer Database' is an overview of previously credit-transferred courses. It is only meant to provide you with inspiration as you plan your courses abroad.
As you use 'The Credit Transfer Database', it is important to keep in mind that:

  • 'The Credit Transfer Database' is a guideline only.

  • All decisions on credit transfer are based on an individual assessment.

  • If a course has previously been approved for one student that studies the same as you, this is not a guarantee that you will get the pre-approval as well.

  • Factors such as previously completed courses, the total course selection abroad and specialized study programmes can influence the evaluation of a specific course.
