Visa and housing

The host university abroad will usually be able to assist with both visa and housing.

Visa for EU citizens

If you are an EU-citizen, you will in most cases need a visa if your exchange destination is outside of the EU. In that case, you will normally get a form sent from your host university, which you need to fill out to apply for the visa.

The application process is often handled through the embassy of the country you are going to. Please be aware that you may need to pay an administrative fee involved in order to apply.

In all cases your passport must be valid for the entire stay abroad and sometimes for even longer than that.

When you are traveling on a student visa, some universities/ countries may require you to be a full-time student during your stay - for example in the US and Australia. Please always know that it is your responsibility to apply for the visa as well as make sure you meet all the requirements.

Please also be aware that once you return to Denmark after your studies abroad, you may have to apply for a residence permit again. For more information, please contact SIRI.

Visa for Non-EU citizens

If you are not an EU-citizen, it is very important that you are aware of the rules pertaining to your residence permit. In most cases a stay abroad will undermine your residence permit in Denmark unless you have applied for a relapse of your residence permit (BF1).

For this reason, it is very important that you contact The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) to apply for a visa and examine the different requirements well in advance. Please note that the visa application process may require for you to apply through your country of citizenship.

Housing

The university abroad will usually be able assist you in finding relevant housing on campus. In most cases, you are welcome to find housing on your own, but if you try to do so make sure you are aware of the rules and regulations in the country you are going to. In this process, we encourage you to read previous students' travel reports, as they may be able to give some good advice in regards to this.
