Study abroad scholarship rates
Course Selection
The size of the SU Study Abroad Scholarship depends on which courses you choose abroad. As part of your application, you must attach pre-approved credit transfer for the courses you plan to take abroad. These courses will be assessed according to the three funding rates used by the Uddannelses- og Forskningsstyrelsen.
The Three Funding Rates
Your application will be evaluated according to the three possible rates. The rates indicate the maximum amount that can be awarded through the study abroad scholarship per year (equivalent to 60 ECTS). For 2026, they are as follows:
- Rate 1: 50,000 DKK (60 ECTS)
- Rate 2: 71,300 DKK (60 ECTS)
- Rate 3: 104,100 DKK (60 ECTS)
If you choose courses at an engineering faculty abroad, this may in some cases qualify for Rate 3, whereas courses at a business or humanities faculty generally fall under Rate 1 or 2 — even if you take them as part of your DTU programme.
DTU emphasizes that all courses must be placed in a rate category according to guidelines set by the Uddannelses- og Forskningsministeriet. Courses are categorized based on the faculty/department that teaches them at the host university and the academic field of the course. The rate categorization is not based on the degree programme the student is enrolled in at DTU, nor on which DTU courses the foreign courses will substitute.
Please note that it is not possible to confirm which rate you will receive until after your application has been processed, since all listed courses must be assessed first.
Number of ECTS
The amount of funding you can receive depends on the number of ECTS credits you have obtained pre-approval for. If you have 30 ECTS approved, you will receive the full rate for a DTU semester, provided all courses fall under the highest rate category. If you have only 20 ECTS approved, you can receive a maximum of two-thirds of the semester’s rate.
Please note…
- The scholarship will only cover the expenses listed on SU’s website and will therefore never exceed the total of these costs.
- If the scholarship does not cover the full tuition fee at the foreign university, it is possible to apply for a loan covering all or part of the difference between the Danish rate and the foreign university’s actual tuition fee.
- Your foreign tuition fee is converted into Danish kroner based on the exchange rates set by Danmarks Nationalbank on 1 April and 1 October. It is therefore important to compare your foreign tuition fee with the rates at these times, as they can vary.
…and that it is not possible to:
- change the amount once the application has been submitted
- apply for more than one study abroad scholarship for the same period
- apply for a scholarship for more than 30 ECTS per semester (unless additional expenses can be documented)
- receive an additional payment once the study abroad scholarship has been disbursed
