The EU Commission wishes to promote both inclusion and sustainability in the Erasmus+ programme. This is currently presented in 3 options for extra funding.
Deadline to apply for all top-ups is the 30 June 2026 for stays taking place in the fall semester of 2026.
Green Travel
All Erasmus+ students will receive a travel rate as part of their Erasmus+ grant. If you plan to travel sustainably e.g. by bus, train, car-pooling or bike at least 50 % of the return trip both to and from the destination you can apply for the higher green travel rate.

Fewer Opportunities Top-Up
The Erasmus+ programme is highly focused on inclusion, and on students with special needs and/or fewer opportunities. For some students in this category there will be an option for a “Fewer Opportunities Top-Up Grant” - an additional 250 Euro/month (8,33 Euro/day) on top of the ordinary Erasmus grant.
These are the Erasmus+ categories of students with special needs and/or fewer opportunities:

(both physical and mental conditions)
|
Medical Certificate (lægeerklæring),

|
Summons (indkaldelse)
|
|
Care takers or resource persons (parents, adoptive parents, care takers for a diseased family member, mentor or support person). Bringing your child with you is not a pre-requisite.
|
Paternity/maternity certificate,
adoption certificate or similar
|
Please note: EU guidelines for the fewer opportunities top-up are subject to change.
Funding cannot be guaranteed and changes to the above criteria may occur.
To apply: Students who wish to apply for the Fewer Opportunities Top-Up should send an email to erasmus@dtu.dk before the deadline. We will then add a new “action” to your Erasmus+ application so that you can upload the required documentation.
Special needs/Inclusion Support
The Office of International Education can apply for extra Erasmus+ funding for students with special needs (physical or mental disability). The Danish support services, such as ”Specialpædagogisk Støtte (SPS)” or assistance provided according to ”Lov om Social Service” are well developed and it is often possible to bring this support while going on exchange abroad. Please see SPS under udvekslingsophold
In general, Erasmus+ special needs funding can only be obtained when used to cover expenses that are supported according to the Danish social services but where it is impossible to bring this support abroad. In some cases, however, support can be given to students with physical or mental disability who do not receive support for SPS or “Lov om Social Service” given that the disability – according to a concrete and individual assessment – makes the support necessary for carrying out the Erasmus+ exchange.
In some cases, additional help to existing SPS or LSS can be given if the exchange abroad results in increased expenses.
Examples of this could be:
- Extra expenses covering a personal helper travelling with the student
- Extra expenses covering medical treatment abroad
- Extra expenses due to special accommodation needs
To apply: If you believe, you fall under the above-mentioned categories, please contact erasmus@dtu.dk with a short description of your situation and what expenses you have, so we can guide you on what to do. Please contact us as soon as possible so you can prepare your application and supporting documents before the deadline. You will then be asked to document your special needs/disabilities and to provide a budget (as well documented as possible) for the expected extra costs.
We will then check if you could be eligible for the extra support and apply to the Danish National Erasmus+ Agency. Please note that this process can take time, so contact us early – preferably as soon as possible after your nomination to the stay abroad.
Documentation: After your stay you will be asked to document each of the approved expenses with receipts. If the documented amount is less than the granted amount, you will be asked to repay the excess grant.
Inclusion support is paid out as a separate supplement to the Erasmus+ grant.
